Development strategy
PAION selects drugs for development that address indications with a high unmet medical need. Its know-how in all areas of international drug development including the nonclinical phase and production aids PAION in identifying promising drug candidates and to perform several development projects in parallel quickly, efficiently and cost efficiently.
In its development activities PAION has adopted a number of measures aiming at risk minimisation. Drug candidates are chosen for development based on different criteria:
- established proof of concept
- innovation potential
- market indications with no established therapeutic approach
- more than one potential indication (e.g. stroke, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury; acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism and peripheral arterial occlusive disease)
- clinical program limited in size and suitable for accelerated approval.
PAION's goal is to partner clinical products after the first major value driving milestone (usually after Phase II) in order to share the risk of later clinical development. PAION aims at retaining certain marketing or co-marketing rights for its own drugs.
